Since the very first day the company's artistic director has been Professor Borys Kolnohuzenko. Maestro Kolnohuzenko is People's Artist of Ukraine, member of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine, prize-winner of 14 international competitions, O. Maselsky State Prize holder. He is also the author of the Theatre's concert programmes and shows.
In the 15 years of its existence 'Zapovit' has become one of the best folk dance troupes in Ukraine. The company is the winner of all prestigious national and international dance festivals held in Ukraine. Among them are the All-Ukrainian Pavlo Virsky folk choreography competition and the 'Rainbow' International folk dance contest.
'Zapovit' Dance Theatre took also part in the jubilee celebrations commemorating great choreographers P. Virsky's and V. Avramenko's 100th anniversaries.
In its native city of Kharkiv, 'Zapovit' Dance Theatre takes part in all important cultural events and concerts. Each year the company shows its unique art in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital. Our dancers have performed on the stages of the 'Ukraine' National Palace, the Ukrainian National Opera, the 'Ukrainian House' Palace of Arts, the Ivan Franko State Drama Theatre.
Various artistic forums often invite 'Zapovit' Dance Theatre to take part in their work.
The Theatre's dancers have been prize- and Grand Prix winners at international competitions and festivals in Russia (Krasnoyarsk), Belarus (Homel), Poland (Poznan), Bulgaria (Selistra), Germany (Stuttgart, Baden-Baden), Belgium, France (Paris), Hungary (Budapest), Austria (Vienna), Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante, Tudela, Almenara, etc.), Portugal (Lisbon, Porto, etc.).
The company has toured the United States of America (New York, Washington, Cincinnati) with great success.
The Theatre shows scenes from the life of the Ukrainian people across the country from the East (Slobozhanschyna) to the West (Zakarpattia), its customs, traditions, every day life, episodes from the independence wars.
Each choreographic piece is a kind of theatre performance with an interesting plot, vivid characters, virtuoso technique of male and charming fascination of female dance.
Of great importance is the work of Volodymyr Lisnevsky - the well-known musician, conductor, arranger. Maestro Lisnevsky, the national and international festival prize-winner, is the present musical director of the company.
33 members of 'Zapovit' Dance Theatre are prize-winners of international contests and festivals in many countries of the world.
All of them are creative personalities who follow in the footsteps of prominent masters of the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture and show their talent as performers and teachers in Ukraine, Russia, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Greece, Italy, France, Israel, China, Japan.
A valuable contribution to the development of choreographic art has been made by the teaching staff of the Department of Folk Choreography, notably by the company's ballet-master Karyna Ostrovska, international arts festivals prize-winner; 'Zapovit' soloist Oleksandr Tsomaya, All-Ukrainian ballet-master competition and International folk dance festival prize-winner, the ballet-master of the 'Happy Childhood' children's dance troupe; 'Zapovit' leading soloist Larysa Dehtiar, international arts festivals prize-winner; 'Zapovit' leading soloist Iryna Kosareva, international arts festivals prize-winner; the Autonomous Republic of Crimea's Honoured Artist Olga Bukhtiyarova, the ballet-master of the Ukrainian Navy's Dance Ensemble; ballet troupe 'Benidorm Palace' (Spain) soloist Oleksandra Tkachenko, international competitions prize-winner; Svitlana Dvoyashkina and Oleksandr Avdeyev, international and national contests prize-winners; the lecturer at the Department of Modern Choreography, deputy dean of the faculty of Choreography Art Natalia Chilikina, international and national contests prize-winner.
The thrilling choreographic pieces created by Professor Borys Kolnohuzenko as well as the high level of 'Zapovit' dancers technical skill and artistic expressiveness are based upon three unique phenomena, namely:
1) the originality of the Ukrainian folklore heritage ;
2) the school of folk stage dance created by Pavlo Virsky;
3) constant support, attention and personal example of dedication to the art of dance by Maestro M. Vantukh, the best folk dance choreographer of today.
It is not by chance that Professor Kolnohuzenko chose the name 'Zapovit' ('Testament') for his brainchild. He is convinced that we in Ukraine should carefully preserve this country's cultural heritage and pass it on to the descendants.
'Zapovit' Dance Theatre is ready to show the wide audience across the globe not only the best pieces of Ukrainian art of dance, but also the beauty of the Ukrainian people's soul.
