Tales Of The Old Mill

The production "Tales of the old mill" expounds on ancient folk rites with a mixture of modern plastic arts, choreography, choral singing, video projections and clips.

The mill is the centre of all ancient traditions, mythic transformations and magic powers in Ukrainian culture. Here it is possible to access the magic world, look at hidden sides of time and loose your human form.

A miller looks after the mill; only he knows its secrets and mysteries. Sometimes water-nymphs (mavky), water-sprites, sorceress and wood-nymphs come to the miller from this mysterious fairy world. All of them are connected with the magic circle of the miller.

The circle is a symbol of unity, integrity, endlessness and completeness. It is connected with the heavenly bodies of the moon and the sun.

The actors, adult professionals and teenagers (10 to 16 years old) perform plastics, singing and acting. The dialog is sung or spoken in traditional Ukrainian. Bright stage design in national folk styles, original costumes, and ancient theatre properties make the production an enchanting performance.

In the play, children have to go through a whole year's rites and traditional ceremonies in one day: to plant corn, reap the harvest and bake bread. They are helped by an old Miller and four nymphs (Mavky), which are the symbols of the four seasons; spring, summer, autumn and winter.
