About the Instruments Bone Flute Neolithic Period Unearthed at Jiahu site, Wuyang The flute was made by the leg-bone of a crane with seven drilled holes on it dating back to 8,700 years ago. Tone-testing indicates that the flute is the ancient descending scale with the complete seven tones. Grey Pottery Xun Shang Dynasty Unearthed from the tomb of Fu Hao, Yin Ruins, Anyang Pottery Xun firstly appeared 6,000 to 7,000 years ago. The grey pottery Xun of the illustration dating back to about 3,000 years ago has a flat bottom in the shape of an egg and basically symbols the main form. Stone Paixiao Spring And Autumn Period Unearthed from the Chu tomb of Xiasi, Xichuan The paixiao (Pan's Piples) was made by one whole stone in the shape of a bird's wing, consisting of 13 pipes of different length. The size of the thinnest pipe wall is only 0.1 cm. The carved diagonal design on it simulates the straps used for fasting pipes of bamboo-made Paixiao. The holes on each pipe have a different depth for pitch. Wang Sun Gao Bronze Chime Bells Spring and Autumn Period Unearthed from the Chu tomb of Xiasi, Xichuan The set of bronze bells is composed of 26 Yong Bells. Of the musical bells of the Spring and Autumn Period unearthed in China, they are the largest in number and the biggest in scale. It covers a large range of musical tones and indicates that Chinese musical culture had reached a very high level in the Chu State. The inscription of 113 characters carved on the bells says "The owner has made this set of chime bells as a tribute to Emperor of Chu and for the entertainment of honored guests." Wang Sun Gao Qing chime stones Spring And Autumn Period Unearthed from the Chu tomb of Xiasi, Xichuan The Qing is a kind of stone-made percussion instrument. The tune of Qing chime stones is pitched by the different size of the stone. The set is composed of 13 chime stones with the chime bells of Wang Sun Gao. The number of duplicate Qing chime stones is expanded to 26 pieces to consummate their semitones. Fish-shaping Qing chime stone Shang Dynasty Unearthed from the western tomb area, Yin Ruins, Anyang The Qing, with a history of more than 3,000 years, has a black grey colour and the shape of a fish. A hole is drilled on the fish head to hang. It has a harmonious sound. This kind of upright Qing is the unique style of Central Plains in ancient China. Bian Zhong Bells from Xinzheng Spring And Autumn Period Unearthed from bronzes cellar at Xinzheng Over 260 bells being hung on over 10 racks have been excavated from Xinzheng since 1996. Their hang ruler of the bells is consisted of 20 pieces of Niu bells and 4 pieces of Bo bells. The set of bells has the ancient descending scale with the complete seven tones. They produce melodious and varied rhythm. This set of bells has far greater progress in tone scale arrangement than before. Wood Drum with Tiger-shaped Stand Warring States Period Unearthed from Changtaiguan, Xinyang The drum, dating back to more than 2,000 years ago, was made of a phoenix tree and decorated with cloud design in black and red colour. Its stand is formed by two tigers opposite each other and decorated with fish scale and scroll cloud designs. Two feet of a phoenix on the back of tigers are used for supporting the drum. Qin in the Shape of Plantain Leaf Ming Dynasty Qin is an ancient music instrument to sound by plucking the strings. It was said that Fuxi and Shennong invented Qin instrument. Through the ages ,scholars have selected studying Qin as a required course. Lying stress on boundless and occult state with rich expression power is characteristics of Qin. The tune of classic beauty embodies profound Chinese culture and deep national marrow. Wood Se Spring and autumn period Unearthed from Hougudui, Gushi Se is the earliest stringed instrument recorded on Chinese history. Six wood Se instruments were excavated from the tomb of Hougudui. The Se has a length of 1.9 metres and 19 strings ,and is made of one whole Chinese parasol wood. The body is decorated with ten coiled snake design in relief. Ancient Music
